Razi Nurullayev: "Most of the dead are between 57-62 years old"

Razi Nurullayev: "Most of the dead are between 57-62 years old"

"Most of those who lost their lives in recent years are between 57-62 years old..."

This was said by Razi Nurullayev, a deputy of the Milli Majlis.

Fakt Yoxla examined this claim of Razi Nurullayev.

In response to the information request of Fakt Yoxla from the State Statistical Committee, it was stated that in 2017-2021, the number of deaths between the ages of 57-62 in Azerbaijan was 6,921, 7,008, 7,022, 10,242, and 10,285, respectively. The sharp increase in the number of deaths in 2020 and 2021 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As can be seen from Table 1, the absolute number of deaths in the 57-62 age group is greater than the number of deaths in the two age groups between 65-74. Although the number of deaths in the 75-79 age group in 2017 and 2018 is more than in the 57-62 age group, it is behind the 2nd in other years. In the years subject to the comparison, the age group with the highest number of deaths was 80-84 years old.

When comparing the number of deaths per 1,000 people in an age group, it was found that the number of deaths per 1,000 people increased with age. So, the lowest result in the number of deaths per 1,000 people in the mentioned age groups belongs to 57-62-year-olds. In other groups, this indicator is higher.

Table 2. Number of deaths per 1,000 people by age group, in people

As can be seen from Table 3, the number of deaths per 1,000 people in the 57-62 age group varies from 10.6 to 14.0, while it is higher in other age groups.

When calculating the share of deaths in the respective age groups among the total dead population, interesting trends emerged. So, although this indicator developed at a decreasing pace in the age group between 65-74, it increased in the age group between 75-84. However, a further decrease was observed in the age group of 85 and older. As can be seen from Table 4, the share of the population aged 80-84 is the largest among the total dead population in the Republic of Azerbaijan. In other words, the share of deaths among people in the 57-62 age group was 12.1-13.4% of the total deaths during these years.

A special nuance should be noted here that the 57-62 age group was mentioned in the claim. While this group covers 6 years, other groups only cover 5 years. From this point of view, the number of deaths in the age group of 57-62 may appear more than others. To see how much this affects the outcome, let's look at the number of deaths per year.

Table 4. Average statistical number of deaths per 1 year for each age group, in people

As can be seen from Table 4, the 57-62 age group is superior to the 70-74 and 75-79 age groups in terms of the number of deaths per age group, but it lags behind other age groups.

Thus, deaths occurring among age groups over 57 years old in Azerbaijan were compared from 4 perspectives.

In the total number of deaths by age groups, those aged 57-62 are completely higher than the 2 age groups located between 65-69 and 70-74, and partly higher than the 75-79 age group, but lower than the following age groups.

By age group, the number of deaths per 1,000 people is higher in all age groups over 65 than in the 57-62 age group.

In terms of the share of deaths among the total population, the 57-62 age group lags behind the two age groups over 80.

Finally, according to the number of deaths per year in each age group, the 57-62 age group is ahead of the 70-74 and 75-79 age groups, and behind the other age groups.

Fakt Yoxla concludes that MP Razi Nurullayev's claim is False.
